Physicians at the Kepler University Hospital interested in applying for the JKU Faculty of Medicine’s innovative junior research support and qualification program can submit an application beginning November 29, 2021. The programs provide funding to support explorative, prospective and innovative research programs in the field of translational research, clinical and preclinical research as well as base-knowledge medical research.

The grant provides a funded leave of absence from clinical practice at the Kepler University Hospital, giving physicians an opportunity to focus extensively on implementing their research programs, networking, establishing research groups, and publishing articles in renowned journals.

Since the program began in 2019, 32 clinician scientists and 11 advanced clinician scientists have been admitted to the program after submitting their research projects as part of a competitive admissions procedure. As part of the third round that began in October 2021, eight clinician scientists and six advanced clinician scientists will start the program. Four advanced clinician scientists will successfully complete the program this year.

In June 2021, a survey was conducted among those who took part in the program in 2019 and 2020 in an effort to evaluate the program. The survey elicited very positive responses in regard to academic/scientific supervision at KUK and at the JKU as well as in regard to organization in education and the program in general. Those in the program especially appreciate the opportunities to readily combine conducting research into their clinical routine. Those who responded to the survey indicated that services provided by the Competence Center for Clinical Research at the Faculty of Medicine were very supportive.  The survey also showed that physicians are confronted with many specific demands at the crossroads between providing clinical care, conducting research, teaching, and progressing in their medical degree program. The program has evolved since the start of the program in 2019, undergoing some revision and adding more flexible use of leave to conduct research as well as offering new program options.
