80 Days and Counting to the Start of the Semester

Aside from the one or the other final examination, Summer Semester 2020 is over. This semester will surely be remembered in years to come, going down in history as the Coronavirus Semester.

Together with our faculty members, you have proven just how strong the JKU spirit is - especially when overcoming exceptional situations. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you and our faculty members for going above and beyond. You have truly earned your vacation and we would like to wish you a relaxing summer holiday. To those working: We wish you all the best.

80 Days and Counting.

The first class of the coming Winter Semester will start in 80 days. Our planning schedule is running at full speed. Although the Sars-CoV2 virus will unfortunately continue to be with us for some time, we  are planning to experience the upcoming semester together with you once again on campus. A few things are already taking place on campus - such as lab exercises as well as exams in the cafeteria and computer rooms - however, more things will start up again, particularly in adherence to all safety measures. We have all learned how to deal with this virus and (hopefully) we will learn to be even more consistent. While the lecture halls will not be full to capacity this fall, during the coming semester we will find the ways and means to make the campus a central place for education and meeting up. Nothing can replace in-person classroom education.

Over the next few weeks you can check back here as we will provide regular information about just how we will organize the next semester with - and despite - the coronavirus. Together, we want to take advantage of the freedom to meet up once again on campus - in real life - and learn from one another. Exercising this freedom is subject to certain conditions: We have to each practice personal responsibility for ourselves and toward others. Even now during the summer, we ask that you maintain social distance, wash your hands regularly, wear a face mask or face covering when in public buildings, and be very careful if you suspect you have any symptoms! We are confident that we can rely on our students' sense of personal responsibility and consideration toward others, both on and off campus.

What's New on Campus.

By the way, when you return in the fall, you may not recognize the campus as construction is scheduled to be completed on the new Kepler Hall mit Sporthalle und Fitness-Center, opens an external URL in a new window, the Learning Center, opens an external URL in a new window in the library courtyard, the Circus of Knowledge, the cafeteria basement with renovated lighting and ventilation, and the redesigned main corridor in the Kepler building. The outdoor area featuring a football pitch and beach volleyball courts will also be waiting for students to use! The upcoming Ars Electronica Festival, opens an external URL in a new window is set to start on campus (September 9 - 13) and a new futuristic JKU Würstelstand will be located at the tram stop. We'll tell you more about that in the coming weeks.
