Laura Thäter was presented with the award in recognition of her Master’s thesis titled "Auf dem Weg zu einem demokratischeren digitalen Arbeitsmarkt: Die Rolle von Gewerkschaften bei der kollektiven Organisierung von Plattformarbeitern", written while still in Lüneburg. Her thesis focuses takes a unique example – the German Metal Workers’ Industrial Union’s Code of Conduct initiative - and addresses how unions try to influence working conditions on the economic platform and how this impacts the platform workers’ position of power and the union. The findings show that tried and true trade union formats can also be beneficial in digital labor markets.
