On the main square in Linz, in front of an audience of thousands, Heinrich Gleißner (the president of the University Funds and then Governor of Upper Austria) and then Mayor Edmund Aigner symbolically handed former Rector Ludwig Fröhler the keys to the university. The ceremony was followed by the official opening ceremony in Lecture Hall 1 by then Austrian President Franz Jonas.
