JKU Professor Appointed Military Legal Protection Officer

In accordance with § 57 of the Military Authorization Act, the Austrian President has appointed Prof. Sigmar Stadlmeier as Legal Protection Officer.

Acting upon a recommendation submitted by the Federal Government and effective as of April 26, in accordance with § 57 of the Military Authorization Act at the Federal Ministry of Defense, Austrian President Alexander van der Bellen has appointed Ao.Univ. Prof. Dr. Sigmar Stadlmeier LL.M., as Legal Protection Commissioner. The Legal Protection Commissioner and his deputies review the legality of measures taken by military intelligence services that interfere with human rights when the individuals affected have no knowledge of this.

Prof. Stadlmeier remarked: "I am delighted that the legal protection officer for the Federal Minister of Defense comes from our alma mater, the JKU." JKU Rector Meinhard Lukas also congratulated Prof. Stadlmeier on the appointment: "On behalf of the JKU and personally, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Prof. Stadlmeier on his appointment."

Prof. Sigmar Stadlmeier is head of the Institute of Public International Law, Air Law, and International Relations at the JKU. He is also a distinguished author in the field of cyber warfare and was a member of the development team to support a new university of applied sciences degree program at the Theresian Military Academy focusing on information and communication technology (ICT) in military command and control.
