15,400 Prospective Med Students Registered to Take the MedAT Entrance Exam

The registration period for the admissions procedure to study medicine closed at the end of March.

The registration period to study medicine at either a medical university in Vienna, Innsbruck, Graz, or at the JKU Linz Faculty of Medicine, closed at the end of March. This is the eleventh year the JKU Linz has been part of the procedure. As of March 31, 2023, a total of 15,400 prospective students have committed themselves to taking the MedAT examination on July 7. In March 2022, 15,788 took the MedAT examination.

Detailed Information about the Registration Numbers:

The Medical University of Vienna: A total of 7,537 applications (2022: 7,881) - 6,842 for medicine, 695 for dentistry. Of these, 2,705 are men (2022: 2,889) and 4,834 are women (2022: 4,992).

The Medical University of Innsbruck: A total of 3,200 applications (2022: 3,350) - 2,885 for medicine, 315 for dentistry. Of these, 1,125 are men (2022: 1,211) and 2,075 are women (2022: 2,139).

The Medical University of Graz: A total of 2,589 applications (2022: 2,650), 2,401 for medicine, 188 for dentistry. Of these, 963 are men (2022: 962) and 1,626 are women (2022: 1,688).

The Faculty of Medicine at the JKU Linz: A total of 2,074 applications (2022: 1,907). Of these, 769 are men (2022: 689) and 1,305 are women (2022: 1,218).

The MedAT-H and MedAT-Z Entrance Examinations: Content

The entrance examination to study medicine (MedAT-H) consists of multiple sections, including a written section, and is divided up as follows:

  • Fundamental Education: Reviewing content from past school subjects such as biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics.
  • Text Comprehension: Reviewing reading skills and text comprehension.
  • Cognitive Skills and Abilities: This section consists of five skill groups (assembling figures, number sequences, word fluency, memory retention and recall, and recognizing implications) and assesses basic cognitive skills and abilities.
  • Socio-Emotional Skills: This section consists of skill groups Recognizing Emotions and Social Decision Making to capture key aspects in the area of social-emotional skills.
    In 2023, the social skills section will be expanded. In consultation with the participating universities and the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science & Research, an additional test section, "Regulating Emotions", was created for this particular subsection. Furthermore, additional questions have been added to existing test sections and the Socio-Emotional Skills section.

For the most part, the entrance examination for dentistry (MedAT-Z) is identical to the MedAT-H examination but the Manual Skills section includes Wire Bending and Mirror Shaping instead of the Text Comprehension and Recognizing Implications.

An Overall Total of 1,850 Spots to Study Medicine
In all, 1,850 students can be accepted to study medicine and dentistry starting in the 2023/2024 academic year. The Medical University of Vienna will accept 750 students, the Medical University of Innsbruck will accept 410, the Medical University of Graz will accept 370, and the JKU’s Faculty of Medicine will accept 310. In regard to studies, a minimum of 95% of these spots are reserved for EU citizens and those of equal status eligible to study, and a minimum of 75% of spots are reserved for applicants holding a secondary school-leaving certificates issued in Austria. This quota regulation, however, only applies to those studying medicine.
