The steady increase of an aging population is affecting nursing care. The profession is demanding but also, those who require around-the-clock care should be in a position to afford it. The rising demand, particularly for a live-in caregiver to provide 24-hour care, has resulted in agencies placing migrants as caregivers, bringing with that some tension in regard to decent working conditions and being able to provide good quality care. While the scenario is familiar, what is the reality? Brigitte Aulenbacher (head of the JKU Institute of Sociology), Helma Lutz (Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main in Germany), and Karin Schwiter (University of Zurich in Switzerland) have explored this area as it pertains to German-speaking Europe.
