Prof. Hochreiter Presented with the “Upper Austrian of the Year” Award
 

The daily local newspaper OÖN presented Prof. Hochreiter with a state award for contributing significantly to regional innovation and achievement in 2018.

As head of the JKU’s Institute for Machine Learning, the German-born academic has been conducting research and teaching at the university for the past 13 years. He is a worldwide pioneer and leading expert in AI, having created "Long Short Term Memory". His work can be found in every mobile phone today.  The daily local newspaper OÖ Nachrichten presented Sepp Hochreiter with the “Austrian of the Year” award in the category "Wirtschaft und Wissenschaft" in recognition of his contributions to attracting worldwide attending to research being conducted at the JKU. The jury praised his achievements stating, "Thanks to Sepp Hochreiter, the University of Linz is gaining global recognition and companies such as Google and Porsche want to work together with him." The JKU scientist is pleased about the award and grinned, adding, "As a Bavarian, this is a particularly special honor for me."
