Scholars Workshop in Management: Scientific Excellence in a Virtual Space

Earlier in May, the 8th annual Austrian Early Scholars Workshop in Management took place online in lieu of the measures to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus.

The workshop provides a unique opportunity for young researchers from all over the world to present their work to a panel of top international researchers. Organized by Prof. Robert M. Bauer (JKU) and Prof. Giuseppe Delmestri (WU) as a central initiative of excellence by JKU Management Research, the workshop is a valuable collaboration between the JKU Linz and the Vienna University of Economics & Business. Young researchers from Europe, North America, and South America met with international research leaders from renowned Austrian and international universities such as Oxford University, University of Edinburgh, University of Alberta and University of Victoria to discuss their academic work. The JKU was represented by Prof. Elke Schüßler and Prof. Matthias Fink.

Due to current measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the workshop had to be moved online. All of the faculty members unanimously agreed to take part via video conferencing in the virtual paper development roundtable discussions. Junior researchers showed tremendous interest, once again underscoring the large gap that the Coronavirus pandemic has created in terms of scientific dialogue taking place at international conferences.

Prof. Bauer remarked: "Despite the crisis, we were able to provide junior researchers with an opportunity this year to present and further develop their work. Unfortunately, other workshop aspects, such as making professional contacts, fell to the wayside. Still, I am pleased that the state of Upper Austria has allowed us to carry the promised funding from this year over to next year. In 2021, during the course of the 9th Austrian Early Scholars Workshop in Management, the JKU Campus will once again become a creative and personal place to come together."
