Symposium “Migrant Crime – Myth or Reality?”

The issue of migrant crime is a highly charged, controversial topic in today’s media. A symposium at the JKU took a closer, scientific look at the issue.

Experts from Austria, Switzerland, and Germany spoke to an audience of over 250 about current studies conducted in German-speaking Europe. The findings were then discussed with representatives from the government, police, press and NGOs.

Prof. Alois Birklbauer summarized: "The strong interest in today’s conference shows that it is important to analyze the facts in a factual, evidence-based way in order to draw conclusions. The university is just the right, objective location so that, in the interest of knowledge transfer, we can drive the advancement of society forward."

The symposium was organized by the Institute of Criminal Law at the JKU. The findings are expected to be published in the March issue of the Journal für Strafrecht.
