Prof. Dr.Dr.h.c.. Carlton J. Maxson from Texas A&M University was a great friend of the JKU, particularly to the Institute of Algebra. Beginning in 1985, he came to the JKU almost every year, often as a visiting professor and often at his own expense. His visits resulted in many joint academic and scientific publications and he also supervised Diploma degree theses and doctoral dissertations. Prof. Maxson received an honorary doctorate degree from the JKU in December 2011. He passed away on September 1, 2021, at the age of 85 following a serious illness.
