Gender Awareness in the Classroom.

Did you know that over half of all girls and boys still pursue a profession considered typically "female" or "male"?

Conventional role models and stereotypes continue to be deeply rooted in our society, influencing the way we think, act, and ultimately what kind of education and career choices young people make. The results include a disparity in income and career opportunities. The foundations are laid in early childhood as decisions regarding specific types of education/specific profession have been influenced by gender-specific socialization at home, at school and by society. Education in accordance with gender roles - done albeit unconsciously - is not uncommon.

Nowadays it is more important then ever before to support the interests of school-age girls and boys and provide non-gender based scholastic and recreational programs.  In order to address gender bias in the classroom and affirm unconventional occupational choices, children and young teens must become more gender aware and learn how to challenge stereotypes.
