Completion of a Doctorate Degree.

Completion of a Doctorate degree program requires the successful completion of an Oral Defense of the dissertation, the successful completion all of the required examinations, and completing a doctoral dissertation. The respective curricula applies in regards to degree completion.

Approximately two weeks after successfully passing the Oral Defense, students may pick up their official conferral degree (issued in German and English) at the Office of Examinations and Recognition Services.
Students must complete and submit the UStat2 (a census form regarding study-related stays abroad).

The doctoral candidate must agree on a date for the oral defense together with the examiners and notify the Office of Examinations and Recognition Services at least three weeks prior to the agreed-upon date.

The doctoral candidate must agree on a date for the oral defense together with the examiners and notify the Office of Examinations and Recognition Services at least three weeks prior to the agreed-upon date. The dissertation must already be graded at this time.

Submit the registration form (signed by the Examination Senate) to the Office of Examinations and Recognition Services no later than four weeks before the oral defense is scheduled.

The doctoral candidate must agree on a date for the oral defense together with the examiners and inform the Office of Examinations and Recognition Services no later that 10 days before agreed upon date (in person, in writing, or by phone). 
At this time, the examination roster must be confirmed, the dissertation must be graded, the evaluations must be submitted, and the registration form must be approved by the head of the subject area.

Requirements:

  • Completion of upper level school classes at a higher secondary school with honors
  • Completion of final school-leaving examinations with distinction
  • Completion of a relevant degree program with distinction: all examination subjects and the Master's/Diploma degree thesis graded with a "1" - oral defense and dissertation graded with a "1"
  • Average duration of studies cannot be exceeded (a longer period of study due to acceptable reasons can be excused)

Submit the application to the Office of Examinations & Credit Transfer immediately after the oral defense
