At the Faculty of Social Sciences, Economics & Business we aspire to achieve. Our committed and talented workforce focuses on solving complex social and business issues. Rote learning is not how we approach education in legal studies at the Faculty of Law. Instead, by focusing on teaching legal methods, the JKU can prepare students to face the challenges that a rapidly changing legal system can bring. The JKU is a pioneer as the first European university to introduce the Faculty of Law’s Multimedia Diploma degree program in 2004.
The JKU’s Faculty of Medicine opened its doors in 2014 and is the JKU’s youngest faculty. The Johannes Kepler University is the first Austrian university to offer a medical degree as part of a Bachelor’s/Master’s degree system. The goal is to secure Upper Austria’s next generation of physicians. Our program gives students research skills as well as the ability to address social issues even beyond Austria’s borders. The Faculty of Medicine’s research on clinical ageing and healthcare services will serve as the starting point to create Upper Austria’s medical valley.
The JKU stands for outstanding education and research in technology and drives cutting-edge programs in the forefront of innovation. The JKU stands for excellence in research and teaching in technology and has a pioneering role when it comes to engineering innovation. In 2015, the JKU had a unique opportunity to pool its expertise by creating the Linz Institute of Technology (LIT). LIT is an internationally-oriented center for education and research in technology and actively involves businesses and industries located in Upper Austria. The future LIT Open Innovation Center will feature interdisciplinary scientific and academic teams and business consortiums working together to share expertise, resources and create synergies. The LIT Factory is the centerpiece, a pilot factory supporting Industry 4.0 standards.
Teacher education studies are experiencing a paradigm shift and separate teaching programs to train secondary-level educators are a thing of the past. Whether at the new middle school, or teaching at AHS, BHMS or polytechnic schools: In the future, all school students from the age of 10 to 18/19 will be taught uniformly by trained educators. Since the 2016/2017 academic year and together with nine other colleges in Upper Austria and Salzburg, the JKU has been a part of "Cluster Mitte", offering teacher education studies to train secondary-level teachers. The Master's degree program at the JKU will begin in the 2020/2021 academic year.
In addition to a number of institutes at over four faculties, the JKU also has six independent, interdisciplinary institutes. Whether it be women’s studies & gender research, criminology, or intercultural communications, we conduct subject-specific research and offer educational programs pertinent at all of our faculties and schools. Issues in different disciplines converge at our interdisciplinary institutes.
