From Mozart to DJ Profs: The JKU Extended an Invitation to the Sci Ball
As part of the "Futuristic-Urban" concept, the Johannes Kepler University's SciBall on January 18, 2019 featured a choreographic redesign of Mozart's Magic Flute classical overture to modern DJ sounds by JKU researchers.
JKU Rector Meinhard Lukas and his wife Astrid Lukas opened the ball with a traditional waltz. Rector Lukas remarked: "The JKU Ball has always been a celebration for many JKU employees, beginning with central administration to our academic and scientific community. Above all, however, it is also a ball for our students. Therefore, in addition to classical ball traditions, we focused on creating a contemporary evening designed to meet everyone's musical tastes."
The SciBall was mixture of classic and modern music featuring a choreographic redesign of Mozart's Magic Flute overture (idea, concept, staging and choreography: StageArts by Nicole Wegerer-Jeschke), the sounds of Six Pence and Goldensound as well as the spectacular midnight show by black-light artists' group "Grazer Akrosphäre", impressing numerous guests as well as the guests of honor from the Upper Austrian government and the local business community. Guests included Governor Thomas Stelzer, University Council Chairman Heinrich Schaller, Senate Chairman Michael Mayrhofer, Paul Rübig (European Parliament), Director of the Upper Austrian Chamber of Commerce Hermann Pühringer, Director of the Upper Austrian Chamber of Labour Josef Moser, the President of the Provincial Court Linz Andre Starlinger, Constitutional Judge and JKU Professor Markus Achatz, the Deputy Provincial Police Director Erwin Fuchs, the Rector of the Art University Reinhard Kannonier and the Managing Director of the Kepler University Hospital, Heinz Brock.
Your Prof is Your DJ
The SciBar science bar was brought back for one more night and students danced to the sound of 2:tages:bart. A special treat was the "Your Prof is Your DJ" challenge featuring hip JKU researchers such as Martina Mara, Stefan Fink and Max Eiselsberg personally working the sound turntables. Ball guests judged for themselves whether the JKU professor's musical tastes ranked as high as their research.
