Prof. Dr.Dr.h.c. Carlton J. Maxson of the Texas A&M University was a great friend of the JKU and, in particular, of the Institute of Algebra. Since 1985, he visited our university almost every year, often as a visiting professor, and often he paid for the trip by himself. This resulted in numerous joint scientific papers; he also helped as supervisor of diploma theses and dissertations. Prof. Maxson received a Honorary PhD from our university in December 2011. He died after a courageous battle with cancer on September 1, 2021, in the age of 85.
