Seit September 2021 leitet Thomas Gegenhuber den Lehrstuhl "Managing Socio-Technical Transitions" an der Johannes Kepler Universität (JKU) Linz. Er schloss 2017 sein Doktoratsstudium der Betriebswirtschaftslehre an der JKU Linz ab. Im Rahmen seines Doktoratsstudiums, das durch Stipendien der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften und des österreichischen Bundesministeriums für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Wirtschaft finanziert wurde, besuchte er die University Alberta, die FU Berlin und die University of Edinburgh. 2018 wurde er zum Juniorprofessor für Digitale Transformation an der Leuphana Universität Lüneburg ernannt, wo er weiterhin als Visiting Researcher tätig ist.
Thomas forscht zu nachhaltiger Transformation (z.B. Open Social Innovation; dieser Ansatz bringt verschiedene gesellschaftliche Akteur*innen zusammen, um große Herausforderungen zu bewältigen) und digitaler Transformation (z.B. neue Formen der Organisation wie digitale Plattformen). Die Arbeiten von Thomas erscheinen in Fachzeitschriften wie Human Relations, Business & Society, Government Information Quarterly und Stanford Social Innovation Review. Er ist außerdem Mitglied des Redaktionsausschusses der Zeitschrift Information & Organization.
Thomas hält häufig Vorträge auf akademischen wie auch auf praxisorientierten Konferenzen. Im Bestreben, seine Erkenntnisse in die Praxis umzusetzen, arbeitet er mit einer Vielzahl von Interessengruppen zusammen (z. B. Unternehmen, NGOs usw.). So war er u. a. als Sachverständiger für den dritten Gleichstellungsbericht, mit dem Schwerpunkt Digitalisierung, der deutschen Bundesregierung tätig.
