- Upload-Filter: Challenges at the Intersection of Copyright and Technology (Philipp Homar, Institut für Unternehmensrecht)
In recent years, online platforms have been in the center of the European legal development. The European legislator has taken an active approach in regulating online platforms, for example by requiring them to use software-based filtering tools ("upload-filters") to detect and block copyright infringing uploads. Against this background, decisions regarding which uploads are blocked and which are made available on platforms are increasingly influenced by algorithms of the filtering tools. This presentation analyses to what extent online platforms are required to use filtering tools and how a balance with conflicting interests of users to avoid over-blocking can be achieved.

The Austrian government has set the target for achieving climate neutrality in 2040. Still, most of Austrians universities - like JKU - are not climate neutral yet but offer a high potential for carbon emission reduction, especially in the energy and mobility sectors. In its performance agreement, JKU has set itself the goal of achieving CO2 neutrality by 2030. We, the Energy Institute at JKU, support the JKU team with scientific advice to create a roadmap for a change. Through workshops and feedback sessions with all relevant stakeholders, specific goals and measures will be identified in order to become a non-GHG emitting university. The project aims to raise awareness of the university's carbon neutrality goals and the necessary steps to achieve them. Curious about the recent progress of JKU’s path to climate neutrality? In the LIT session you will briefly learn about the process and on-going steps.
