E-paper technologies enable the realization of energetically highly efficient displays because energy is only required when changing the display content. The project objectives are (1) to investigate how to design an electrowetting-based display to meet the requirements for outdoor usage and to perform well above other existing/emerging systems in terms of energy efficiency, colour representation and economic viability and (2) to fabricate it in a cost efficient large area process. Fabrication of a 50 x 24 cm² sized research module should demonstrate in principle that, subsequent to this project, the developed technology is suited to realize an e-Paper wall sized up to 500 x 240 cm². The main task of ZONA is the optical characterization and optimization of the necessary materials and devices, as well as applying electron microscopy techniques to the structures.
