The Open Innovation Lab

Welcome to the OI-Lab!

Are you studying engineering at the JKU or do you perhaps need something hands-on to support your research? No problem! The Open Innovation Lab provides space, machinery and tools to help you independently carry out your ideas and projects.

 

Our team is on hand to provide you with support and assistance! We look forward to working with you to find innovative solutions. This page provides information on use and safety in the lab.

Hours, availability, registration

Monday to Friday between 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM, excluding public holidays.

Please note: Before entering the lab, record your lab time in the OI Lab calendar, opens an external URL in a new window! Simply create an appointment in any digital calendar and add oi-lab(at)jku.at as a participant.
 

Your appointment must contain the following wording in the subject line:

  1. 'Design'  if using the Design Lab
    'Machining' if using the Machining Lab
  2. Your matriculation number (and those of any fellow students you are registering)
  3. 'Milling' if using the Knuth universal milling machine
    'Lathe' if using the Knuth universal lathe
    'Printer' if using the Raise 3D Pro printer
    'Lab only' for all other purposes

Important: Make sure you see your name in the OI Lab calendar, opens an external URL in a new window (it can take up to 60 seconds for the appointment to appear in the calendar). You can only enter the lab once it appears. The OI Lab calendar, opens an external URL in a new window also displays the current capacity.

Beschränkungen: Der Zutritt zum Design Lab ist aus Sicherheitsgründen auf maximal 7 Personen beschränkt. Der Zutritt zum Machining Lab ist aus Sicherheitsgründen auf maximal 11 Personen beschränkt. Darüber hinaus kann der Zugang durch geschlossene Veranstaltungen eingeschränkt sein.

Restrictions: For safety reasons, the Design Lab is restricted to a maximum of 7; the Machining Lab is restricted to a maximum of 11. In addition, access may be restricted on account of private events.

  • Obtain access authorization in the secretary's office at the Institute of Structural Lightweight Design

Lab rules

The general safety measures that apply when working in the lab are displayed at the lab entrance and is also available here, opens a file.

Additional safety measures are displayed in the OI-Lab for specific workstations and are linked in the equipment list below.

To guarantee a high level of safety in the lab, reporting is mandatory if the following occurs:

  • Accidents and/or any near-accidents
  • Potentially dangerous or hazardous conduct
  • Failure to observe safety measures (for example, not wearing PPE)
  • Contamination resulting from external factors
  • Any mess resulting from external factors
  • Incorrect waste disposal
  • Unreasonable levels of noise
  • Any other infringements of the laboratory rules and regulations, opens a file

Costs and pricing

Material costs are calculated on an annual basis.

The hourly machine and laboratory rates are calculated on an annual basis. Reduced prices will be available to JKU internal users in April 2023 unless funding is available (amounts in brackets).

The annual employee per-hour rate is calculated on an annual basis.

The hourly rate during 2023 is € 37.93.

Students attending courses are not charged for laboratory training

The hourly machine and laboratory rates are only calculated at the end of the year. The costs for machines are calculated and billed retroactively.
