Digital Literacy for Stronger Democracies

We are inundated with an overwhelming barrage of information, day in and day out. Fake news, conspiracy myths, the targeted dissemination of misinformation, and manipulating images make media literacy education more important than ever before. The ubiquity of media and technology demands more than just basic literacy skills.

Michelle Lipkin, Executive Director of the National Association for Media Literacy Education, will discuss the important intersection of media literacy and democracy, highlighting the great challenges and opportunities of the digital age. Lipkin will also discuss the important role of media literacy in empowering citizens to identify reliable information, critically consume and create content, and actively participate in democratic processes.

Michelle Ciulla Lipkin has served as Executive Director of the National Association for Media Literacy Education, the preeminent media literacy education association in the U.S., since 2012. She launched Media Literacy Week in the U.S. and created the National Media Literacy Alliance for teacher membership organizations. Michelle was the recipient of the 2020 Global Media and Information Literacy Award given by UNESCO.

The presentation is a unique opportunity for students, educators, and all those interested in learning more about how media education and strengthening of democratic processes interact. The presentation has been organized by the Linz Institute of Transformative Change together with the Impact Lab, the JKU School of Education, and the Ars Electronica Center in partnership with the US Embassy and the Austrian Foreign Ministry.
