German as a Foreign Language C1

(10 ECTS, 8 hours per week)

Objectives

Receptive (reading, listening) and productive (writing, speaking) skills practice at C1 level according to the Common European Frame of References and on the basis of the textbook “Sicher C1”

 

Communicative skills

  • Expanding and training vocabulary at the C1 level.
  • Summarizing complex, longer texts; formal/informal correspondence with given key points; commenting with reference to statements in texts; comparing and interpreting statistics or pictures; correcting faulty texts
  • presentations, short speeches, argumentation, discussions, interviews
  • Radio news, expert discussions; listening texts (summarizing)
  • News reports, reports, commentaries, glosses, editorials, etc. from the German-language press, literary texts (if applicable)
  • Regional studies and DACH-region culture
  • Exercises on register and style

 

Grammar

  • Different functions of modal verbs; substitution of modal verbs
  • Direct and indirect speech
  • Noun-verb connections
  • Sentence structures: consecutive, modal concessive and causal contexts; two-part connectors; verbal style/nominal style
  • Passive clause forms
  • “Unreal” subordinate clauses
  • Word order

 

Assessment criteria

Mandatory, regular attendance (at least 80% of weekly classes must be attended), active class participation, written homework, presentations, interim tests, oral and written final exam
