Article on Bank Performance Published in APCE

“Retail-Bank Efficiency: Nonstandard Objectives and Environmental Determinants”, by Johann Burgstaller from the Department of Asset Management

The article “Retail-Bank Efficiency: Nonstandard Objectives and Environmental Determinants, opens an external URL in a new window”, authored by Johann Burgstaller, has been published in the Annals of Public and Cooperative Economics. The paper attempts to gauge the social efficiency of regionally operating banks that also pursue nonprofit objectives. This approach therefore amends the common assessment of performance in purely financial terms which is not sufficient for entities with a dual bottom line. In addition, environmental conditions in local markets are considered as important determinants of the examined banks’ contribution to economic and societal development. Results reveal potential for efficiency improvement and lead to several recommendations for regional economic policy.
