The 2023 MedAT examination

Students can study medicine at medical universities in Vienna, Innsbruck, Graz, and at the JKU’s Faculty of Medicine. In all, a total of 1,900 students can be accepted to study medicine. The deadline to sign up for the MedAT entrance examination on July 5, 2024 (between 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM) is Friday, March 29, 2024.

Important, detailed information about the admissions procedure, medical universities, and a FAQs section is available on the joint website: www.medizinstudieren.at, opens an external URL in a new window.

The website contains many sample exercises, information about the individual test section, and groups of exercises, and general processing instructions free of charge so students can prepare better for the MedAT examination. When registering to enroll and when taking the MedAT entrance examination, proof of holding Matura or Abitur qualifications is not required at this time. Prospective applicants must be in the final year of school (12th/13th class) or older to take the test. As part of the admission process, students who are then accepted to a medical degree program in the Fall of 2024 must prove they hold university entrance qualifications.

1,900 students can begin studying medicine this fall
A total of 1,900 students can begin their studies in medicine and dentistry at the start of the 2024/2025 academic year, which is 50 more than last year, including 772 (2023: 760) at the Medical University of Vienna, 420 (2023: 410) at the Medical University of Innsbruck, 388 (2023: 370) at the Medical University of Graz, and 320 (2023: 310) at the Faculty of Medicine at the JKU Linz. A minimum of 95% of spots in the program are set aside for EU citizens - and those of equivalent status - and a minimum of 75% of spots in the program are set aside for applicants holding school-leaving certificates issued in Austria. This quota, however, applies only to spots in the medical degree program. During the 2024/2025 academic year, 85 of the 1,900 spots in the medical degree program will be reserved for public interest functions in different Austrian states, for the Austrian Health Insurance Fund, the Austrian Ministry of the Interior, and the Austrian Ministry of Defense. Prospective students interested in applying for one of these spots in the program are required to proceed with the standard application process at the medical university of choice and agree to perform the public interest functions as part of an agreement with the respective institution. Prospective students must pass the entrance examination in order study under this particular program. See: www.medizinstudieren.at, opens an external URL in a new window to learn more.

When registering to enroll, prospective applicants will be required to pay a one-time, non-refundable administration fee of €110 for the MedAT examination. The fee covers expenses that the universities incur to conduct the admission procedures. The MedAT entrance examination will take place at all locations on Friday, July 5, 2024.
