Learning from the River.

The River as Medium and Driver of Transformation. A Tought Experiment

Brief summary for external students to describe the open section of the course "Cross-Disciplinary Strategies"

The School for Transformation at the University of Applied Arts, Vienna, and the Johannes Kepler University Linz, opens an external URL in a new window, would like to invite students in all majors to attend a four-day workshop focusing on speculative scenario development methods designed to address socio-ecological change.

Drawing on research-based instruction about 'rivers' during the 2023 Winter Semester, students will explore artistic and scientific approaches that extend beyond current ideas of restoring natural urban and river environments. The goal is to design realistic scenarios that engage with a river ecosystem and use these as an active medium to design regenerative and evolving zones.

This methodological-based activity focuses on the harbor in Linz as well as a section of the Danube located in the greater Linz metropolitan area. Supervised by the artistic research collective, 'Times Up', and Herwig Turk (Senior Artist, and a leading member of the transdisciplinary research project 'Donau. Schichtwechsel im Lückenraum'), students in the course will devise new strategies and approaches to challenge the river's exploitation and appropriation by industry, transportation, and tourism, and unleash the Danube's unused and overlooked potential.

The workshop will be held in blocked sessions. The course is worth 2 ECTS credits. Enrollment is limited; students not enrolled at the School for Transformation can apply the course credit toward fulfilling elective requirements.

Students are responsible for covering their own accommodation costs, materials, and any travel costs.
