Medina Hamidović MSc. and DI Stefan Angerbauer, two JKU PhD candidates at the Institute for Communications Engineering and RF-Systems, were both presented with awards in recognition of their work at the prestigious "2023 International Conference on Communications, opens an external URL in a new window“ in Rome (Italy). Hamidović took first place in the "ComSoc 3-Minute Thesis Competition", Angerbauer came in third.

Hamidović's paper titled "Human Generation of Communication Systems" focuses on using communication systems to improve healthcare. She explained: "We are moving from 5G and 6G to 'Human Generation of Communication Systems' developing fully biocompatible and human-integrated systems."

The competition winner added: "Conducting research in a new field can often be challenging and some peers may not value our work. Winning this award is proof to both myself and Stefan as to just how promising and impactful molecular communication research can really be. We are proud to be able to demonstrate that the JKU has one of the world’s strongest molecular research groups."

Angerbauer's paper "Interfaces for the Internet of Bio-Nano-Things" illustrates the Internet of Bio-Nano-Things as cutting-edge technology facilitating the way the human body could connect to the internet. This could open the door to new approaches in patient-specific diagnostics and customized medicine, ultimately helping humanity live a healthier and longer life.

The JKU researcher is pleased about the award and remarked: “Winning this award acknowledges our research as a type of visionary technology for the future. It also shows that others believe in this vision."
