Researchers receive points for each publication published in an academic journal, whereby the journals are weighted according to their rating.

Rudolf Winter-Ebmer, head of the Department of Economics at the JKU, is pleased with the JKU researchers’ outstanding performance and remarked: "These publication rankings span the past ten years and the JKU economists' exceptional ranking is nothing short of sensational. I believe we can attribute the success to our systematic policy of continually recruiting younger faculty members, filling new tenure-track positions by hiring young, up-and-coming researchers, and our incentives to support internationally high-profile research. Just last week, awards were presented in recognition of outstanding publications. This result puts us well ahead of the other universities in Austria, and the JKU is only just behind the top universities in Munich and St. Gallen."
