The four-week program for children between the ages of 1 – 12 offered an exciting mix of handicrafts, exercise, science, and music.

The first week of the program focused on nature and included a visit to a llama farm in the local countryside, observing butterflies in the Danube floodplains, and petting snails at the Biology Center.

The second week was all about physical activity and exercise, including climbing, dance, and how to relax using yoga techniques.

This year's summer program included a new feature to work with members from the JKU University Orchestra (week 3, click here to learn more, opens an external URL in a new window). The children spent five days exploring topics focusing on the orchestra, concerts, music, etc. and learning more what the orchestra does. Musically-inclined children were able to try various instruments and learned about Russian composer Mussorgsky by creating their own unique artworks. The artwork will be on display during the university orchestra’s anniversary concert at the Brucknerhaus on November 21, 2019.

Week 4 was all about science: The children attended various workshops to learn more about the JKU. At the workshop organized by the Institute of Criminal Law, for example, the kids learned about why we need criminal law and how a court hearing is conducted. The Institute for International Management spoke about where T-shirts come from and how the international economy works. A workshop by the Institute of Polymer Engineering focused on exploring the surfaces of plants and animal wings in detail, and at the School of Education, STEM Didactics, the kids got a glimpse into the world of computer sciences.
