Tenure-Track Position for Pathomechanisms and Innovative Therapy options in Cardiac Surgery

In accordance with the collective agreement for university employees at the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine at the Johannes Kepler University Linz, the JKU Faculty of Medicine invites applications by candidates holding a doctorate/PhD to apply for a tenure-track position in pathomechanisms and innovative therapy options in cardiac surgery.

In accordance with the collective agreement for university employees and the Austrian Universities Act 2002 (UG) regarding a full-time position (40 hours per week) for a limited period of six years, prospective applicants for the tenure-track position at the Department of Pathomechanisms and Innovative Therapy Options within the Department of Cardiac Surgery at the JKU’s Faculty of Medicine must hold a doctorate/Ph.D..


The position is open to highly qualified junior researchers holding a doctorate/Ph.D. in medicine or natural sciences (biology, chemistry, etc.), and includes the option of signing a qualification agreement which - following a positive decision - could result in a permanent position as Associate Professor (§ 99 para. 5 and 6 Austrian Universities Act).

The successful candidate is expected to strengthen and expand on the JKU's research activities in the field of pathophysiological mechanisms and new therapeutic approaches to treat aortic valve calcifications and thoracic aortic aneurysms. A key priority within these areas of research is to identify and further develop new therapeutic agents and innovative application methods, such as nanoparticles, based on understanding the  involved mechanistic mechanisms. An additional approach in research includes indentifying predictive markers to facilitate early detection, determine the disease’s course in a minimally invasive approach, and monitor treatment success.


The successful candidate for the tenure-track position in Pathomechanisms and Innovative Therapy Options in Cardiac Surgery is expected to demonstrate a high degree of willingness to engage in interdisciplinary and interprofessional collaboration between different disciplines, as well as with professional groups in nursing and medical-technical services.

Following the successful completion of a doctorate/Ph.D., the prospective applicant will be expected to demonstrate a record of academic activity, outstanding publications, teaching experience, and having successfully acquired external funding. The annual minimum salary under the collective agreement is EUR 66,532.20 gross based on full-time employment. The annual minimum salary under the collective agreement will be raised to EUR 78,338.40 upon concluding a qualification agreement. As part of the appointment negotiations, the definitive salary will be discussed with the Rector.
