The Business Program: Structure

Customize the curriculum according to your personal areas of interest in business! The undergraduate degree program in Business Administration lets you choose a major (out of 10 options) and a minor (out of 12 options) to fulfill your specialization requirements. This gives you a unique opportunity to kick-start your career after graduation! If you decide to pursue a Master's degree, your undergraduate education more than fulfills all of the requirements.

Studies Introduction and Orientation Phase (StEOP )

After enrolling in the Bachelor's degree program, you will be required to complete the StEOP requirements at the start of your studies. The StEOP requirements consists of certain courses that are outlined in the curriculum. Before completing the StEOP courses, you can only get limited academic credit when you take additional courses.

The Bachelor's degree in Business Administration provides an introduction to business administration and focuses on numerous areas of business, including business thinking and practices as well as digitalization.

  • In-Depth Introduction to Business Administration: Business accounting, finance and tax management, strategic and international management and marketing, human resource management, organizational structures and processes, innovation and entrepreneurship

What You Learn in the Program

The Bachelor's degree in Business Administration at the JKU allows you to combine business expertise with education in digitalization:

  • Strengthen your business decision-making skills and after graduation, you can work independently at a company in any one of their administrative departments.
  • Digitalization drives companies. You learn to assess related factors and use business information systems.
  • Your expertise will also include an understanding of how other areas of business, such as economics and law, interact with each other.
  • You will learn to develop approaches to find solutions, especially based on real-world business cases: For example, business games will help you understand how organization, strategy, human resource management, innovation, and marketing interfuse with each other. In the area of controlling, you will create monthly reports with planned/actual comparisons, and provide comments and graphics based on annual planning data. You will also learn how to create approaches to find solutions in logistics, warehouse management, and distribution planning.
  • You will learn how to work in a solid, academic and scientific manner, interpret research findings and incorporate these findings into your business decisions.

The Bachelor's degree in Business Administration gives you the education and skills you need to start your career directly at a company or start your own business.

  • Strategic Business Development: As an employee, you support management's strategic development processes. You will also be actively involved in optimizing corporate accounts as well as be actively involved in the corporate communication process (internal and external).
  • Tax Consultant/Chartered Accountant: You will prepare annual financial statements and tax returns, develop tax models, audit and advise (inter)national companies as well as assist in company valuations.
  • Controller: As a controller, you are responsible for preparing various company numbers and figures. You evaluate sales figures, check key figures, and forward recommendation reports to management. You may also report directly to management and develop a balanced score card for your company based on the kinds of strategic decisions that are made. 
  • Internal Auditing: You review all areas of a company's processes and procedures, including purchasing, contracts, project execution, etc. and acquire invaluable insight and overview.
  • Human Resource Dervelopment/Recruiting: In this area, you would be responsible for coordinating continual education programs, be actively involved in recruitment procedures, and help develop career models.
  • Management Consulting: A broad area in which you develop business cases. You play an active role in restructuring or as a member of a strategic development team. If you have IT skills, your academic understanding of business can help you develop IT concepts for companies.
  • Project Management, Change Management, Intrapreneurship: You are at the hub of driving and shaping change processes at organizations. As an intrapreneur, you draft concepts and ideas to support various functions and advance company development.
  • Sustainability Management: As part of the controlling department or directly in the CSR department, you help to implement the company's sustainability goals and shape relations with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Marketing Manager: In addition to focusing primarily on researching markets and designing products and services to meet customer needs, you create demand, launch and distribute services, and communicate effectively with the market as well as the company's stakeholders.

Admission Requirements

In order to be admitted to the Bachelor's degree program, you must fulfill the following requirements.

  • Hold general higher education entrance qualifications (such as an Austrian "Matura" diploma)
  • If your first language is not German, you will be required to submit proof of C1 level of language proficiency in German.

The Bachelor's degree program in Business Administration focuses on business management skills and company practices. The program also provides a base-knowledge understanding of data analyses, fundamentals of digitization, and includes required areas of specialization.

The Bachelor's degree programs in Business & Economics and Social Economics tend to convey a broader picture of business as well as provide more insight in economics and social sciences.

You can get academic credit to count toward your degree for courses in bookkeeping and cost accounting. Contact the Office of Examinations and Recognition Services. As a HAK or CPR graduate, you have an advantage in the program as you will be familiar with many of the technical and business terminology.

Familiarize yourself with business contexts. Even reading the Business section of a daily newspaper can be helpful. There are also podcasts about business topics and company reports. Be curious!
